Paste Paper
I do a slightly different process for making paste paper. I used to cook rice paste, add colorant, let it cool - then I thought, "Am I crazy? Why am I cooking all this for kids?" and so I began to use acrylic paint directly from the bottles - what I like about this is that the colors are really vibrant. What I don't like as much is that you have to work faster, as the paint dries pretty rapidly. Set up a place to workThis is messy work. I usually do this on the classroom tables and make quite a mess, but we can clean up easily there. At home, this is something you'll need to prepare for. I set out a space and taped down a plastic trash bag to keep my space clean, and also determined where I would put my finished pages so they can dry. They will take a couple of hours to dry, so somewhere your cats or kids won't walk across them, and also they will stain the floor/carpet, etc if paint gets on them, so put something down. I like to do this outside if I can, because then I don't worry about getting messy. In the classroom, I usually put out some bulletin board paper in the hall so we can set the wet papers on them to dry. |
I have also given you a few squares of cardboard - you can cut grooves into this to make your own tool for patterning. I have used milk carton plastic, which is re-useable.
You will need to make several pieces of paste paper for the books we are going to make. Make the following:
For a total of 4 pages. You can make more, I've given you 6 sheets of paper. This is good paper for collages and other art things, if you make six, just make sure that 2 of them match for a set of covers.
